Is an unlimited car wash membership worth it in Naperville?

It is worth it if you wash more often than the plan's break-even — usually two to three washes a month. Divide the monthly price by what you would pay for the same wash once. Chicago-area salt season makes that number easy to hit from December through March; July usually does not.

The one division that answers it

Take the monthly price of the plan and divide it by the price of a single wash at the same tier. That is the number of washes a month the membership needs before it pays for itself. A $30-a-month plan whose wash sells for $15 once breaks even at two washes a month. The third wash in that month is free, and so is the fourth.

Compare like with like. Most washes sell a cheap entry wash and three or four better tiers, and the unlimited plans follow the same ladder. The honest comparison is the tier you would actually buy, not the cheapest one on the board.

Why winter changes the answer

From the first salting in late November until the spring rains wash the roads clean, a car in DuPage and Will counties picks up a film of salt brine on every drive. Salt does its damage where you cannot see it — seams, brake lines, the underside of the rocker panels — and it works fastest when it is wet and the temperature is above freezing. A rinse every week or two in that stretch is ordinary maintenance, and at that pace nearly every plan in the area pays for itself.

Summer is different. Two or three washes a month is plenty in July, which puts you near the break-even line on most plans. If you only wash in summer, pay per wash.

What the price on the sign leaves out

One car per membership. Plans are tied to a license plate or an RFID sticker; a second car is usually a discounted add-on, not free.

How you cancel. Some plans cancel in an app in a minute; some need notice before the next billing date, and none refund a partial month. Read the terms before you sign up, not when you want out.

Where it works. A membership that is valid at every location in a chain is worth more if one of those locations is on your commute. Each review on this site says how far a membership travels.

Quick rules of thumb

Wash weekly in winter and every other week the rest of the year: buy the membership.

Wash once a month, or only before an occasion: pay per wash.

Somewhere in between: buy a membership in November, cancel it in April.

Short answers

How many washes a month does an unlimited car wash plan need to pay off?

Divide the monthly price by the single-wash price of the same tier. Around Naperville that works out to roughly two to three washes a month for most plans.

Should I cancel my car wash membership in summer?

If you wash fewer times a month than your plan's break-even from May to October, pausing or cancelling saves money. Check whether the plan charges to restart before you do.
